A transistor controls the flow of current between the emitter and collector.

The larger current is supplied by the power supply, across the emitter and collector.

The flow is then controlled by a small current applied to the base connection.

So, a large current flow mimics the small signal current.

Limits are reached, when the transistor gets close to being fully switched on or off. This will cause distortion. To avoid this, more amplification is provided by a series of transistor amplifiers, one after the other.

What do transistors do in a circuit?

Transistors provide most of the activities a circuit needs to operate. In their most basic representation, transistors are amplifiers. That is, they take and amplify a signal from the level produced by a microphone and amplify it enough to blast it out through a speaker. Transistors are also used on decision making circuits, like electronic gates and Central Processing Units (CPUs). Solid state, electronic systems like desktop computers, cell phones, and GPS devices would not be possible without transistors.

Will semiconductors amplify the electric signal in a transistor?

Actually, a transistor is a device made from semiconductor material, and they're used to amplify and switch electronic signals as well as electrical power. Before transistors were invented, product engineers had to use vacuum tubes and electromechanical switches in order to complete electric circuits.
