All trees grow straight up. :D
if trees were to grow under other trees , there would be a a mixture in the roots of the trees ,which will make it impossible for the trees to grow properly....i think that is why trees tend not to grow under other trees...
A trees trunk will grow 'fatter' if it gets plenty of water. The more water the bigger ring of growth for the tree for that year.

You grow fatter by eating the foods which are high in fat. Also, if you don't eat a balanced diet you can grow fatter
Noting that apples and oranges both grow on trees
Tress like other living organisms develop and grow - In the case of a tree it grow higher and spreads its root structure to both stabilise and assist in the feeding process. Trees are also able to grow in girth (get wider) this helps in stability and strength
No but it is good exercise nothings really going to help you grow faster or taller the only thing you can help your self to grow is fatter/wider which I'm sure you don't want to do. Swimming is good exercise though so keep it up.
White oak trees are shorter and wider than most trees around them. By being wider, they shade out seedlings that would grow into taller trees and shade them out. By being shorter, they let lightning hit and kill the taller trees. Once the taller trees growing right around them die, others do not replace them. They are still short so that lightning hits other trees. Lightning hits those trees which are replaced.
Little sport and eat more
by being fatter
