Fraternal twins (and other multiples) occur when the female ovulates more than one egg at a time and more than one is fertilized. Females that are overweight or older are more likely to ovulate more than one egg at a time. Fertility drugs encourage the body to 'drop' more than one at a time. And the tendency can be inherited.

Identical twins are formed by chance, when a single fertilized egg(ovum) splits into two. Fraternal twins develop from two eggs fertilized by two sperm, and are just individual brothers or sisters (siblings), born at different times.

Non-identical twins occur when two separate eggs are fertilized by 2 separate sperm. This happens when the female's body prepares and releases 2 eggs during one cycle.
