Research has been done to determine the amount of feed, on a dry matter basis, that an animal should consume per pound of body weight. Veterinarians simply measure the weight of the animal, apply factors to account for unusual metabolic processes (athlete, pregnant, lactating, growing) and then use simple algebra to solve the equation.

For the most part, veterinarians in private practice don't use a lot of equations; for the relatively rare times an equation is posted, the veterinarian has generally already solved the base equation for the variable needed and they simply plug the known variables into the equation and solve it. Most of the mathematics veterinarians use are actually dimensional analysis - converting one unit of measure to another unit of measure such as converting a dog's weight to the number of pills to give every so often to treat the dog's ear infection.
