Backwash a sand filter with a multiport valve; # turn off the pump motor # Start by Rrotating the handle on the multiport valve from the FILTER position to the BACKWASH position, Usually in the opposite direction) # Start the pump, Usually there is a clear bubble on the sand filter and you will see dirty water running through it, Wait until this water starts to run clear. otherwise keep an eye on the water exiting if you can until it runs clear. this can take about 2 to 4 minutes. # Shut off pump motor and move multiport valve handle to the RINSE position .Run on rinse for 15 - 30 seconds. once again you can keep an eye on the clear bubble to see the water clear if you have one.
# Shut off pump motor again and move multiport valve handle back to the FILTER position # Now start pump again on and take note of the lower pressure. when the pressure gets too high again it is time to backwash once again.
Filter, winter, closed, backwash, rinse, waste
when the pressure is high on filter mode it usually means that a backwash is required.
Backwashing is done to clean the filter media in sand and DE systems. Cartridge filter systems don't have a "backwash" provision. You just remove the cartridges and wash off the dirt and debris with a hose.
The "backwash knob" - usually called the handle - is located on top of the filter or just to the side of the filter on a sand filter. They could be on the very bottom of the filter or to one side of the filter but never on the pump. The filter is the large tank.
It sounds like either your valve is not set completely to "filter" or your valve's seals are degrading. If the valve is completely set to "filter", then either replace the valve, or plug the end of the backwash hose. Here's a good place to look for new backwash filters: http://www.swiftpoolsupplies.com/category/product-list/backwash-valves
Depending on the size of the pool and the size of the filter and the amount of times you have to backwash, also if you have had a lot of rain then you may need to backwash more than usual. If you put the pool in and the filter and you know how old the sand is, if you are backwashing more than usual, change the sand. Also before you backwash check the pressure of the water going back into the pool, then backwash check the pressure again the pressure should for any size hayward pump push your hand away if it does not then change your sand.
You may have to check the seals in the multyport on top of the sand filter.
Less maintainance with sand you just backwash, and change sand every four years. Cartridge filters clog and have to be taken out and cleaned often. Use sand it is hands down a better system.
No, backwashing is used during the cleaning of the sand, when the pressure has gone up on the filter, or you feel the vacuum is not doing its job that is when you should backwash.
It sounds as if there is too much sand in the filter , try reducing the sand level a little
Your sand filter multihead is either in the backwash, rinse, or waste position. Move it to the filtration position.
There wont be any dirt under the sand. When you vacuum your pool you should do it on filter mode Otherwise you will lose a lot of water for nothing, this would be especially wasteful in the case of a salt water pool. Ofter having vacuumed the pool on filter mode and if the pressure gets too high backwash. after backwash rinse for a minute, then return to filter.
