Less maintainance with sand you just backwash, and change sand every four years. Cartridge filters clog and have to be taken out and cleaned often. Use sand it is hands down a better system.

Is a sand or cartridge filter better?

Overall a Cartridge filter seems like a good choice for several reasons: 1. They are much smaller 2. They tend to pick up finer dirt 3. They are manually cleaned, so no pool water is used (sand filters are backwashed. This uses lots of pool water) However the disadvantages are: 1. For them to work properly again, they must be let dry after cleaning. 2. The Western Australian Health Department says that pool water should be completely replaced every two years. By backwashing a sand filter, you are always replacing the water. I live in Florida and I have a pool business myself, a cartridge filter is better than a sand filter. If a sand filter breaks it is more expensive to repair than a cartridge filter because 9 times out of 10 the top of the sand filter where the pressure guage is will leak and that means replacing that whole part or the whole sand filter. Most cartridge filters are 2 pieces, a top and bottom half with an rubber O ring in the middle. Most of the time you can buy the top half or bottom half separately saving you money on repair cost, and what usually happens is that the O ring is damaged due to the chlorine in the filter and or the weather. Cartridge has much finer filtering ability and doesn't require backwashing, which drains water from the pool. But it does require period cartridge replacement. Sand is much cheaper and less likely to become plugged with dead algae. The media (sand) only needs to be replace roughly every 10 years. For most people sand is the best all around choice.

What what size sand filter do you need for 23000 gallon pool with 1 hp pump?

I think you should go for a cartridge filter (Pentair 320 sq ft - we can supply for $600 incl frt). Cartridge filters are much better than they used to be, and are far, far more coinvenient than sand. Suitable sand filter would be approx 100 sq ft (and same cost as 320 sq ft cartridge).

Do you need to bring pool pump and filter indoors?

No , if you have a D.E. filter instead of an older cartridge filter than the D.E. can get pretty messy if when you filter clean , and if you have a backwash when you backwash .

What is better sand filters or cartridge swimming pool filters?

Thats kind of a tough question to ask, do not know how large of a pool you have, sand filters are excellent change the sand if you feel you are backwashing to much. DEA are good however they should be taken apart and soaked they will cake up and the ropes will become blocked after a time you can take the filter apart then soak the ropes in muratic acid at the end of the season, To me cartridge filters require more attention you have to much exposed area in a pool to much dirt, rain brings a lot of dirt with it, cartridges are my least favorite. It all depends on your needs on which filter to purchase. If you want low maintenance, go for a sand filter . Not afraid of a little work now and then, then cartridge is the way to go. If you need to best and sparkliest pool around and money is of no concern, then go with a DE filter. Any of these will work find, it's all about what you're looking for. Become educated in the variety of filters on the market and choose wisely. It's your money. I do prefer cartridge filters because they put less of a strain on the motor and are fairly easy to maintain.

What are the pros and cons and differences between sand and D. E. pool filters?

Gayle- There are basicly 3 types of filters. Sand, Cartridge, and D.E. filter. Differences being numerous, but in a nut shell is the ease of maintence and care and the size micron of particle they will filter out of the water. With that said sand is the easist to maintain regularly but, cart., and DE filters filter out smaller particles. DE filter out the smallest particle but, with the most difficult to maintain and repair etc. Hope this all helps, Mystic Waters Inc. GA There's a relatively new filter medium available called zeolite, which is a volcanic sand rather than the usual silica sand. Because each grain of zeolite has one hundred times the surface area of a grain of sand, zeolite used in a sand filter filters almost as effectively as a D.E. filter while being much easier to maintain. I'd absolutely recommend that you look into zeolite before buying a D.E. filter.

Can you use Aqua Perl in your sand filter instead of sand?

You should not use Aqua Perl (Which is a Expanded Perlite Filter Media), or DE filter media in a sand filter. Here are a few reasons: 1. The Aqua Perl will come out every time you backwash your filter (it is much lighter and has a certain percentage of "floaters" (material that floats on top of water). 2. There are very small particles in both Aqua Perl and DE that may get into your swimming pool causing a "cloudy" effect. 3. Sand is much more permeable than Aqua Perl, and you will get a lower flow rate than with sand. The pressure will be higher as well. 4. A sand type filter is not designed for either Aqua Perl or DE. To use this type of filter media you need a DE type filter. Using a DE type filter will give much better results than with sand.

Is low sand in pool filter bad?

It depends on what you mean by low. You need to check your filter's manual, and see what level it SHOULD be. Lower than that, usually means you are losing sand into the pool (you'll know!) or when you backwash (because the pump is too big for the filter.) If you are losing sand, you need to correct the cause and then add more sand, after you've resolved the problem.

What are the pros and cons of DE filtering compared to sand filtering?

After six years in this home with a 15 year old pool cartridge filter, I junked it for a DE filter. I'm very very satisfied with the change. The DE filter cleans the pool quicker, but I did get a larger one than recommended because various notes on the internet suggested getting a larger filter, which means more square footage of filtering medium inside the filter, which means longer durations between DE replacements. I highly recommend the DE filter. I owned many pools in different parts of the USA for 30 years and have converted them all to paper cartridge because it was much less hassle then either DE or sand and I also use an aqua-jet electric vacuum machine. I hardly ever have chemical or algae problems.

Is a cartridge filter better than a DE Filter?

A DE filter will filter finer particles. It also depends on the application. Some cities are not allowing DE filters to be back washed into their sewer systems within city limits. (Calif) k

How do you separate sand from water?

You just need to use filter paper. use the filter paper than just pour the water and sand on the filter paper. the sand will go to the filter paper while the water will go straight to the beaker or anything below it. That is how you separate it. To separate sand and water you could pour the mixture through a filter. The water would pass through the filter but the sand would remain on top of the filter. If you didn't need to save the water you could evaporate the water and leave the dry sand behind. Or allow the sand to settle and carefully pour off the water first. Then allow the remaining water to evaporate.

What is the best filter for an inground pool?

I work for a pool company and have found that a sand filter is the most common. An earth filter provides the best filtration but can be more time consuming and can cause a problem when using a bacquacil pool. (ie, frequent clogging). There is also cartridge filters but i find those to be less efficient compared to the sand and earth. hope this helped! I would suggest that each type of filter has its own advantages and disadvantages; Sand: Affordable, dependable, easy to maintain, but not the highest level of filtration and cleaning (backflushing) wastes water and can be a mess. Most common for both above and in-ground pools. Cartridge: Better filtration than sand, very easy to maintain and clean, but more expensive. Good for above ground pools. DE: Great filtration, but more expensive and more difficult to clean than sand or cartridge. Great for in-ground pools. ...
