What is better sand filters or cartridge swimming pool filters?

Thats kind of a tough question to ask, do not know how large of a pool you have, sand filters are excellent change the sand if you feel you are backwashing to much. DEA are good however they should be taken apart and soaked they will cake up and the ropes will become blocked after a time you can take the filter apart then soak the ropes in muratic acid at the end of the season, To me cartridge filters require more attention you have to much exposed area in a pool to much dirt, rain brings a lot of dirt with it, cartridges are my least favorite.

It all depends on your needs on which filter to purchase. If you want low maintenance, go for a sand filter .

Not afraid of a little work now and then, then cartridge is the way to go.

If you need to best and sparkliest pool around and money is of no concern, then go with a DE filter.

Any of these will work find, it's all about what you're looking for. Become educated in the variety of filters on the market and choose wisely. It's your money.

I do prefer cartridge filters because they put less of a strain on the motor and are fairly easy to maintain.

I depends on what you want. Both filters work great, although cartridge fitlers may work a bit better and are easier on your pool pump.

Sand filters are less expensive and filter pretty well. If it's just two of you or a small family and you have a tight budget, then go with sand. You'll need to backwash on a regular basis.

Cartridge filters are a bit better at getting the smaller elements, but you have to take them out and wash them, they can't be backwashed and might be a bit of a hassle.

In the question ,Is Sand or DE a better filter, It depends on what you are looking for. The DE is a much better filtering media than sand as it takes out a much finer particle of debris,but the DE filter is also not as convenient as the sand type filter. The DE powder as it is backwashed out of the filter should be collected and disposed of. Some local Building Codes require an approved system for this purpose,so check with your local building department before deciding. Another consideration in a pool filter should be the Cartridge filters. The new ones are greatly improved. They are in between the sand and DE as far as convenience, but they clean better than sand , and you do not waste 1000's of gallons of water each season backwashing as you do with the other two.......Ernie from konabayonline.com
