Cartridge pool filters are made of polyester cloth or corrugated paper. The filter can be washed with a hose and should be replaced after up to 8 years.
Pool cartridge filters can be purchased through a few different locations. Amazon and Target both sell the cartridges online. They can also be found locally at Wal-Mart and Shasta Pools.
Cartridge filters can over time become les effective because the material they are made of becomes clogged with calcium. A method that worked well for me in the past before I changed to a sand filter was to soak the whole cartridge in a fairly strong solution of acid. This eats out the calcium and gets the cartridge working properly again. I may be wise however to check that the material of the filter can withstand the corrosive effect of the acid. Cleaners that do this are also available ready made at pool shops.
You need different filters for the pool, such as: sand filters, cartridge filters, and the diatomaceous earth or DE filter. Pool cleaning supplies are also good to have, such as: brushes, water level checkers, nets to get out debris, and cleaners like chlorine. Test strips will be needed for tracking the balance of your PH levels.
SAnd is used in sand filters. rocks are not used in pool filters.
You can by a "filter cleaning" chemical at your pool store. It usually requires you to soak the filter in part water and part chemical for 12 hrs or so and then spray with hose. It works great on our hayward cartridge filter.
The frequency of changing or cleaning your pool filters will depend on the kind you have. If you have the variety that uses sand, you should have it cleaned once a year, any more frequently and the filter may not work effectively. If you have a cartridge style with an indicator then a marking of 8 to 10 PSI is when it should be replaced.
A cartridge pool filter works by collecting the particles filtering through the pool. It allows water to pass through, but not solid objects.
If you have a sand or DE filter the setting is filter in the case of cartridge filters it is filter as always unless there are other settings for your particular setup.

Most home pools use a cartridge type filter. These are quite adequate and filter down to the 25 micron range. If you have health concerns, you should consider a diatomaceous earth filter, which can filter out particles in the size range of most bacteria and many virus cells. This is the type of filter used on most commercial swimming pools.
Pressure can vary greatly from one system to another. It's best to record pressure immediately after cleaning the filters. This will be your base pressure. When the pressure rises 10-15 psi above the base rate, it is time to clean the filters.
