How does global warming form?

Global warming is caused largely by excessive amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The thick layer of CO2 insulates the earth. Heat that is absorbed from the sun during the day cannot escape back into space at night as it would naturally.

By burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, transport and the generation of electricity, we are putting too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. There is too much of it for plants to absorb.

The fact that every year we are losing more and more of our natural rain forests is only adding to the problem. We are removing those things on the earth that would naturally absorb CO2. The rate we are polluting the atmosphere is much higher than the rate that CO2 can be reabsorbed by the environment.

Global warming is formed by the radiation we receive from the sun. This heat is trapped by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This keeps the planet warm.

However, we are putting more and more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). The natural carbon cycle is unable to remove all this additional gas, so it builds up slowly and holding more and more heat.

Then we started burning coal in electricity power stations. Carbon dioxide had been stored in all these fossil fuels for millions of years. Now this extra carbon was suddenly released into the atmosphere where it turned the normal carbon cycle upside down. The greenhouse effect, which had been keeping the planet comfortably warm, suddenly turned into the enhanced greenhouse effect, warming up the planet much more quickly. This is causing global warming.
