Green wire on the distributor is the tachometer pick up. Green wire on the distributor is the tachometer pick up.
The computer uses the pick up plate in the distributor to know when to activated the coil to cause a spark to go down the coil wire to the distributor cap and through the cap and rotor to an individual plug wire to the spark plug. The computer uses the pick up plate in the distributor to know when to activated the coil to cause a spark to go down the coil wire to the distributor cap and through the cap and rotor to an individual plug wire to the spark plug.
u have to look at ur distributor if it is an HEI "coil on top there is markings on the distributor cap for the tach but if it is a regular distributor with an external coil you hook it up to the neg wire off the coil neg/ black wire
The tach should connect to the distributor.
distributor wire to the distributor red and brown to the starter alternator hook up is the same on the v 6 and the 305 all located on left side of wiring harness coming out the fire wall and you will have to have a vacum advane distributor to bypass computer
Most basic way to start it. Run a hot wire to the Batt terminal on the distributor, where the wires connect on the side of the distributor it should be a square projection on the side of the cap. The Batt. wire should be the right hand one as you look at it. Power to this wire and arc the starter. An 86 should be carburated so you don't need to worry about the computer. The truck will run but you will not have the rest of the electrical system, the alternator will not charge, this is just to run the motor.
Question is confusing. Original wiring, power to the plus side of the coil, minus side of coil to the distributor. If you have put an electronic HEI distributor in then eliminate the coil and take the plus side wire and connect to the HEI.
Connect the green wire to the negative side of the coil.
It's the same on a Chevy pull your distributor cap see what position the rifle buld is facing and drop the electronic dust. In the same position and wire it up and add an ignition power to the distributor.
Should just "snap" in
The green wire from the tach goes to the negative side of the coil.
