How to achieve integrity? A basic definition of integrity is: "the state of being complete and entire; having everything that is needed". With reference to moral character it means being honest. To achieve integrity the following steps are required: # One must first be honest with oneself; to achieve this one must first know oneself; to know oneself one must be free of cultural, family and peer influences that are so strong that one feels unable to act with free will - in so far as anyone can act entirely of their own volition. # Once on is able to be honest with oneself then one must act in a way that does not compromise anyone else's ability to be honest in return; in other words one must give integrity in order to gain it and if one is given integrity one must return it in order to maintain it. # For the above processes to work one needs to be sufficiently grown up and independent to make one's own decisions and to have been brought up with sufficient integrity to know oneself and to be honest with oneself. # One's actions must then match one's words. # One must act in an honest and transparent way. Tips: # The honesty be are speaking about is purity of intent and does not mean never omitting facts or even saying things that may not be 100% true - on the other hand lying won't work - the point is that we are not talking about being clever with words, but using words in a transparent way without artifice manipulation or deceit. # Sometimes one has to spend a bit of time alone to be able to know that one is acting act with free will - entirely of one's own volition, this is especially the case if you are subject to strong cultural, family and peer influences. # Being honest with oneself means owning up to past faults but not living with guilt. # The best - and possibly only way - to gain integrity may be to give this quality to others; in other word to act in such a way that you allow other around you to act with integrity, so that the quality can be reflected back on you. # Self consciousness needs to be left behind here - this can be learned by watching how infants interact since they do not know what integrity is and therefore have the seeds of this already; simply put they have not yet learned how to use artifice manipulation or deceit.
