To remove the fuel door housing, first remove the three Phillips head screws easily visible behind the fuel door. Then, push the filler neck out of the way. From there you can reach your fingers around the edge of the housing, and release the three or four tabs holding the plastic housing into the rear quarter panel. It is tricky to figure out how the tabs work but once you do figure one out, the rest are easy. You just have to find the "barb" part that you press to release each holding tab.
THEN once you pop the thing away from the quarter panel, you have to carefully reach into the left side of the assembly to the back side of the actual hinge part, and disconnect the clip holding the sliding door safety lever rod. It's the exact same kind of clip used on door handle and lock connecting rods. AKA "lock rod clip" Once you release that clip the whole thing comes right out.
It was a bit tricky figuring this one out, and I broke the part worse than it was already broken trying to get it out. But like anything else, once I got it out it was like "OH, that's how they did it". Seems impossible at first but really simple if you know how. It's another magnificent plastic "snap together" invention.
