remove ash-tray,remove two screws and gently pull on lower pannel. You now have access to a/c controls lights on rear of pannel. To remove top pannel just remove two screws at bottom of pannel and again gently pull pannel out.
Remove the instrument cluster then replace the bulbs. = =
remove the complete dashboard and then replace it
If the VSS is defective replace the instrument cluster.

You can't you have to replace the whole dashboard instrument cluster assy.

You need to remove the instrument cluster.
To remove and replace the heater core on the 1987 Nissan 300ZX with air, begin by removing the dashboard totally. This means the radio panel and the instrument cluster. Remove all air ducts and access the heater core. Remove the bolts holding the core and replace it with a new core. Then replace the dashboard and instrument panel.
You will need to remove the instrument cluster board. To do that, remove the trim piece around the instrument cluster, then carefully pull the instrument cluster out of the dashboard. Note that the instrument cluster plugs in to a socket in the dashboard, so be careful as you remove the circuit board so that you do not damage the plug. Once the instrument cluster is out, replace all bulbs. They twist to remove, and if the odometer bulb has failed, the others are getting old too. It might be best to replace them all to avoid future problems.
Remove the dashboard instrument cluster cover. The cover is secured with four retaining screws. Take hold of the dashboard light, push in and turn at the same time to remove it. Reverse the process to install the new dashboard light.
Replace the light bulbs that are burned out, usually from the back side of the instrument cluster.
You need to remove the instrument cluster or control panels you want to work on to get access to the bulb holders.
