Most Craftsman riding mowers have the brake on the right side of the transaxle. If you get behind the mower and lay on the ground look between the right tire and the transaxle. There is an arm going to the brake assembly. The adjustment is made by tightening and loosening the nut on that assembly. First you need to raise the rear of the mower and secure it on stands or blocks. Then take a 1/2" wrench and start tightening the nut on the assembly until the wheels get hard to move. Once you get resistance back it off slightly until the whells move free again and stop. This should give you a good brake again. Note: If the nut is very easy to adjust you may want to go to the hardware store and get a new locknut so the brakes don't back off again. Also: If the brakes now hang after adjusting them you may have to take that assembly apart and clean rust or corrosion off of the two pins that apply the pressure to the brake plate. After cleaning the pins lubricate them lightly and put it all back together and you're ready to go. It's not a difficult job. It just take a few minutes.
