It could be that your EGR valve has failed or has a piece of carbon stuck in it .
The 1997 GMC Jimmy tension bar has adjustment nuts on both ends of the tension bar. Turn the adjustment nuts to lengthen or shorten the tension bar distance.

a 1988 tranny should be the 700r4 aka 4l60 it's sometimes referred to.. a transmission in a 1997 should be the 4l60e which is an electronic transmission so no. lol
