You don't usually use your keyboard to do this.
Bold face, and other formatting, is usually done from a menu.
You might - in certain applications - be able to select the text and press the key combination command B.
to the right of the arrow to the right of "Style" there's a bolded B
you click on that then it's bolded
Press Ctrl+b at the same time. Or you could put starts *like this* around the text you want bold.
