Funny you ask as I just broke the mechanism that holds the support rod on and am looking for a replacement.
Basically there is a small plastic assembly that the support rod feeds through (something like your finger fitting through your ring). Unlike your ring, this plastic piece has a spring loaded clip at one end and fits into a small hole in the frame of the car snapping into place.
If you are looking down into your engine, look to the left of the radiator and to the right of the windshield washer fluid reservoir. You will see a small triangular protrusion in the frame. The hole in the protrusion is where the ring clamp (or whatever it is called) goes.
I am currently researching if I can buy just this piece or if I have to replace the entire metal rod (which is not broken) to get this clamp.
Good luck.
