You perform auscultation by listening. At times, you use a stethoscope, but sometimes you use unaided ears, such as when you are percussing the lung fields.
The anatomic landmarks commonly used to auscultate a horse's heart are the level of the shoulder for heart base. A horse having a heart murmur may be from anemia.
The anterior chest is the most common place to auscultate for abnormal heart sounds. Some abnormal sounds may also be heard in the center of the back or in the neck.
Ears and a stethoscope.
Stethoscopes are used to auscultate (or listen) to the various sounds of the body.
Lower right.
If you were going to do so, it would just be the standard heart rate and breathing.

The aortic semilunar valve is auscultated by placing a stethoscope next to the sternum in the second intercostal space.
An external fetoscope resembles a stethoscope , but with a headpiece. It is used externally on the mother's abdomen to auscultate (listen to) the fetal heart tones after about 18 weeks gestation.
The aprical pulse is located midclavicular line, at the 5th intercostal space.
To auscultate for a ventricular septal defect (VSD), place the stethoscope over the left sternal border, specifically in the third or fourth intercostal space. This area is where the characteristic holosystolic (or pansystolic) murmur associated with VSD is best heard. The murmur results from turbulent blood flow as blood shunts from the left ventricle to the right ventricle through the defect. Additionally, you may also hear a diastolic murmur if there is significant left-to-right shunting.
The right lower quadrant is usually auscultated first in the abdomen. This is where the ileocecal valve and the appendix are located, which are important areas to assess for bowel sounds and potential abnormalities.
