Depending on the game you're talking about, you don't technically "finish" the game. In some versions of the game (Like the original Harvest Moon on the NES) there is a time limit, but in more recent versions of the game, there is no time limit and the game can last forever, though there are certain goals set to achieve.

Just live through the game as usual. Get married and farm and that's it. BUT at the end of chapter six your person dies...

To get past chapter 2, all you do is get past the year. And you move into chapter 2.

You must get engaged. Then at the start of the second year you will get married and continue on with chapter two. If you do not choose to get married the game will end.
