Travel was limited in the middle ages because the roads were really holey and bumpy. Sometimes farmers ploughed the road and carts couldn't get past. They did not have suspension either so the travel wasnt very comfy and relaxed like it is now a days.
In the Early Middle Ages, and in the rest of the middle ages in the West, the Pope was most powerful. In the later middle ages in the East, it was the Patriarch of Constantinople.
The period of time from 500 AD to 1500 AD is called the Middle Ages.

In the Middle Ages serfs traveled on foot, by ox drawn carts and boats. If there were lucky they would travel on horses.
