One red monster is the Mother Phoenix, which you battle on the Jungle Planet on Astro Knights Island. You will get the laser lance from the jungle floor, then cross to the right where you have to jump across the Phoenix Eggs to reach the flying unicorn, Pegasus.
Mounted on Pegasus, shoot the smaller bee bird with quick shots, or power up the lance by holding the mouse button, then releasing it to fire. The power shot will knock out several small birds, or the red torpedoes, or the Mother Phoenix. Shoot her three times (in the head) and Dodge if she comes in behind you.
