There are two types of people that help attorneys, Legal Secretaries and Para-legals. Legal Secretaries have the skills of a secretary along with the specialized knowledge, learned through experience, of the operations of the law office and the court system. They know the ins and outs of getting things filed at the court house and the like. A good legal secretary can make a huge difference in the operations of a law office. Para-legals in most places obtain a certificate. It requires a number of classes, about a full year full time. Most programs also require an internship at a law office. They are well versed in legal research and the basic points of the law. They can do most of the basic legal document preparation under the direction of the attorney.
