I got my first rat when I was 8 years old and I kept him on my shoulder all day long, seems like that's all it took for that little guy. (his name was Max XD)
later of course i got older and still loved having rats and as soon as i got them they would run down my shirt and sleep in my sports bra. couple days of that, feeding them some treats and they'll love you for life.

If you are thinking of getting a rat, don't be deterred by this, though it is common, rats are great pets and do develope a bond with their owner.
