It was developed by Kano Sensei (Jigoro Kano) as a less lethal martial art. He was an advocate of the art and worked hard to get it into the Olympics. Do you mean "break" or "brake"? They brake (stop) by hitting the Earth, typically. The force of hitting the Earth may contribute to their breaking (further damage).
