I don't think you believe your own words of "an excellent long-term relations with someone you absolutely adore" or you wouldn't be breaking off this relationship. Some long distant relationships can survive distance and time, so why not give it a shot. If you split-up from this person they are free and 21 and you may well lose them. Take the chance, have a talk with your partner and keep this relationship going. It is possible if you love someone to remain true to them. I was in love with my boyfriend (now married) and we had separated for 6 months, but I loved him dearly and although I dated (didn't sleep with anyone else), he was the one for me and luckily the wait was worth the effort.

If he cannot trust you, then that is a deal breaker to a longterm relationship. Certainly you can't take back the past, but you can be trustworthy now and in the future. He needs to decide if he is going to be able to eventually overlook the past or not.
