- Honesty is the best policy no matter how long you have been in a long term relationship and even though the person involved will be heartbroken they will get over it in time. The sooner the better to tell them and be sure to give them a reason other than 'it's not you ... it's me' as that is an old cliche and is basically telling the person it is them. If you are not honest you may well steal many months to years from this person's life not to mention the fact that you will as well.
