You need to calculate the tangential stresses associated with a rotational velocity and thickness of the flywheel. It will be easier to assume a perfect cylinder and you will also need to know the material properties of your flywheel (poisson's ratio, density).

Is it possible to put a manual transmission clutch disk wrong?
Definately! If you have it backwards the springs will hit the flywheel before the friction surface will. Always put the flatter side toward the flywheel. You would have figured this out if you used the pilot tool and slid the disk up to the flywheel before covering it with the pressure plate, it would have been very obvious. Did you use a pilot tool?

You'll need to either pull the transmission or the engine to be able to get to the flywheel. Once the flywheel is exposed, it's just a few bolts and it falls off in your hands. BTW, when you put the flywheel back on, I would strongly recommend using Locktite or equivalent to keep the bolts from working loose. A flywheel should always be resurfaced before putting it back, unless it's a new flywheel, in which case you should make sure to remove all of the protective oil.
