How do you calculate the number of a name?

In some languages letters of the alphabet also have a numerical value. This can be seen in English where Roman numerals are represented by different English letters:-

There are only 6 letters of the alphabet that are used this way in English. However, in some languages every letter of the alphabet also has a numerical value eg Greek and Hebrew. Because every single letter has a value, this means every word, and therefore a page of words, also has a numerical value; the Hebrew copyists of Scripture were so particular that they checked the total number value of the copied page against the original, and destroyed the copy they had just made if the number was not the same.

This means that there is also a numerical value for a person's name, and there has been a lot of speculation about the number of the name of the beast, or Antichrist, in Revelation 13:17-18

Rev 13:17-18 KJV And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. [v. 18] Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.[ie 666]

Many people have added up the letters of their enemy's name, such as the Pope and Hitler, to get it to come to 666 and so be able to 'prove' they were the Antichrist.

This is wishful thinking: the only thing that can be said for certain is that, as 6 is one letter short of God's perfect number of 7, that the Antichrist will be a man (the 6 is repeated for emphasis) and that his name will be unknown until the time comes.

You are not given the thunders so that 6 is not included

The idea is to not jump on board with one proclaiming to be Jesus before 7 7 7.
