The reel needs to be stripped down and oiled before reassembling. Otherwise, the salt water can cause pitting on the metal surfaces. Also, depending on the material used on the rod and eyelets and rings, etc, they too may need a wipe down, after fresh water washing, with a rag and linseed oil, before putting them away.
Good quality fishing equipment can be costly, so taking proper care can ensure that the equipment lasts for a very long time.
