This is a fairly direct job. Now, having said that, I haven't changed a thermostat in many years, and I've never changed the one in my Sunfire. So, take my comments as advisory at best.
The Sunfires have mounted the thermostats in two places that I know of. Where yours is depends on the year and which engine you have. I recommend you pick up a Haynes or Chilton manual. It will tell and show you most everything you need to know.

There is no speedo cable on a Sunfire.

The thermostat is located near the intake on a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT. The thermostat can be located by following the upper radiator hose directly to the thermostat.

the 2.2 ecotec runs @ 195. i suspect the older motor is the same. or for sure you can just call your local parts store and the clerk can look that up for you.
