Go to Home Depot, purchase the 4 wire power cord. The directions aren't very clear. But most of the colors are pretty self explanatory. White in the middle, red to red, etc. The green one is the confusing part. There is a green wire coming out of the back of the unit. It needs to be grounded on something metal, like the body of the dryer. AND the green wire on the new 4 wire power cord you are attaching needs to be grounded too, also to the body of the dryer unit. There is usually an extra screw/bolt on the body of the dryer to attach it to so it continues to ground out. You can Google around, but doing it yourself will save you from hiring an electrician. The new 4 wire power cord was 14.99 for a 4ft one and 17.99 for a 6ft one. Just remember to attach the cord to the dryer before plugging in!!! Also, some how we flooded our outlet so we had to trip the fuse switch in the garage. So if at first it doesn't work, start over at the beginning and make sure the fuse is on in the fuse box. Also, we thought there was something wrong b/c the fuse looked like it was on, but it was kind of in the middle, so make sure you switch all the way off to all the way on so you can be sure it's on. Good luck, remember safety first!! ~rach

Short Answer: You Don't. You contact a qualified electrician so he can determine if the amperage/voltage is correct for that dryer.

Long Answer: If you have verified that the outlet you want to plug your dryer into is on a dedicated circuit with a 30A breaker, and fused at both ends (see: Maytag installation instructions available online); AND you know that the voltage/number of phases is correct, simply follow the instructions in the installation guide.

Dryer plug three to four

Yes this is possible and for safety's sake highly recommended. Instructions should come with the new cord. Open up the electrical access panel on the back of the dryer. You will see a terminal block with three wires going into it from the plug cord assembly. A red and black and white are now connected to the terminal strip. Look at the position and colours of the existing 3 prong cord and how it is connected. Make a diagram. Coloured wires on the outside terminals white in the center. From the center wire terminal you will see a jumper strap that goes to the frame of the dryer. When installing the four prong plug this jumper is removed completely. The kit should have with it a grounding lug that connects to where the removed grounding strip attached to the frame of the dryer. This is the attachment point for the fourth green ground wire from the new dryer cord assembly.
