Takes a little bit of time, but it's fairly easy actually. I am no mechanic by any stretch, and just performed this on my 01' F250 to save myself $500 at the mechanic shop. Mine was an in-tank fuel pump, and here were my steps:
Note:* Make sure to take all safety precautions prior to proceeding, such as disconnecting the positive battery cable, putting your parking brake on, removing the fuel pump relay fuse, etc.
1)remove skid plate; this was easy - there were 6 bolts holding mine on
2)disconnect rubber fuel hose and return air hose from where you put fuel into the vehicle - mine had a metal screw clamp where the rubber hoses met the metal where you fill it up. Un-screw clamps, and twist and pull off (mine was 11 years old and was stuck, so I had to use alot of elbow grease and a pair of channel locks to lightly twist and break free.
3)place a hydrolic jack under tank and snug it up (this is especially important if you have more than about a 1/4 tank of fuel b/c fuel weighs approx. 6lbs/gal.
4)remove tank straps (mine were metal straps that went around tank and bolted to frame - your jack should keep tank in place while you remove straps
5)SLOWLY lower jack to lower tank.
6)there are two small air lines (one front and top of tank and one rear and top of tank...unclamp both
7)On the top of tank, you'll see two metal fuel lines and power source going into the fuel pump...disconnect power source (just unclamp) and then disconnect both fuel lines (you'll need a special tool for this you can get at Autozone for $3 - it's a fuel line disconnector.
8)your tank should now be free to pull out from under the truck. Mine had a large 'nut like' circle that you unscrew (using hammer and chisel to get started counterclockwise). Once you get that unscrewed, the entire fuel pump and sending unit are exposed.
9)Reach down into the tank, and there is a plastic clip on either side of the fuel pump that you un-clip, and whoa-la, you can pull the fuel pump and sending unit all out in one peice.
10) Reverse order above to replace.
Took me about 4 hours in all, but since I'd never done it before, I was being very careful, and if I were to do it again, I could probably cut my time almost in half.
Hope this helps. I had a hard time finding any other step by step directions, hence the reason I wanted to put this out here for the next person!!!ENJOY SAVING YOURSELF THE MONEY!!
