All you need to do is pull up on the push button in the middle of the knob, comes off easily. Then there is a little metal sleeve deal that covers a plastic rod that does through the shifter itself to pull off. Once those are off look down into the knob and you will see a silver collar ring that once popped off releases the knob.

Answerwith a little modification it will but no it won't bolt up to the 96 engine and besides the 96 had a stronger transmission then the 86.
i have the same problem, the radiator is installed at a slant... so there's not much room to play around.
