To change the difficulty on minecraft, go to the options menu, and click on the difficulty, normally you will start on easy, but you can change it to medium - more monsters, less health, hard - lots of monsters, less health, less item durability or peaceful - no monsters, health regenerates, items last longer.

Set the difficulty to peaceful so you don't see anything scary. in the game, Press escape, click options then change difficulty to peaceful.
