Remove inner door cover (make sure window is up, use door cover remover tool ask any auto store for help), first remove door handle cover (it pops off) and arm rest has two screws, after cover is removed also remover water paper or plastic film cover careful not to damage need to put back on. there are two connectors for door locks and windows (unplug). now there are two bolts 10mm size that hold door handle on use wrench slightly longer in length (ratchet style works great), long needle nose pliers to remove handle rod to door latch mechanism inside door frame. need to look at first. also use shop light to put inside door for lighting. after bolts are off make sure all is disconnected now pull out broken door handle assembly. look at new handle match it up the same. then do reverse to put back together. hope this helps JT

You have to take the inside handle apart to activate the latch manually. If you can't do it from the handle area you have to remove the inside door panel.

You have to:Remove the door panel.Undo the rods off of the handle.unbolt the door handle from the inside of the door.
in my 88 astro van I had to completely break out the back handle to first get the door open then I was able to remove interior door cover to do thr replacement. in my 99 asto van I was able to remove the interior cover to open the door then replace the handle.
Go to Autozone, in the HELP! section you will find replacement door handles for the Safari/Astro (they break that often) the instructions come with. This costs under $20
