This can be done without removing the dash - you need to remove the display panel to the left of the radio (removing the sprung clip thing below will also give you more access - both come out with a small prybar or trim lifter), then have a feel around and there is a round recess just over half way down the heater control to the left - in there is the bulb holder.

Once located use a 9mm socket (1/4" drive best ideally with a right angle attachment) and give it a quarter turn, the bulb holder and bulb will then come out (and if your anything like me fall out of the socket, drop down and get stuck!).

Once you have the bulb holder out the old bulb just pulls out and can be replaced (about 50p from local motor factor). Refitting is the reverse of removal just with more swearing and frustration!

A torch, telescopic-magnetic pick up tool and telescopic mirror really are essential for this job.
