Open the trunk if you can. Try using the key and turn it to the left, very firmly -- the trunk should pop open.
Remove the 12 or so Philips head screws on the carpet liner on the inside of the trunk lid. Remove the carpet liner.
The trunk actuator is a small white box near the center of the trunk lid. Use a 10mm socket to remove the three nuts that hold the silver metal plate that the trunk actuator is mounted on. Use a star bit to remove the two screws that hold the actuator in place. Unclip the wire harness that is plugged into the actuator.
Plug in the new actuator, and replace all the parts in the order you removed them.
Weak trunk struts on a 2003 VW Jetta will not allow the lid to properly stay open. To replace the struts unbolt the mounts holding them to the car and replace them.
A 2001 Jetta has an emergency trunk release lever along the side of the trunk. It allows children or those accidentally locked in the trunk to easily escape from inside.
Actuators in my car are all over it. If you were to ask where a specific actuator is, per say..... Where is the actuator for my trunk lid? That might be an acceptable question, but actuators are used by many different components to open, close, lift, change etc.. another part of that component.
Very simple. Both sides of the trunk, on the inside, have pannels that are easy to open.
on my 97 jetta (same model) just open the trunk with your key and then close it

Slamming the trunk lid can damage the actuator and keep it from pulling the trunk lid down. The actuator will probably need to be replaced.
The CD changer is in the trunk.

You can open it from inside the trunk by lowering the back seats. On the inside of the trunk door, there is a white lever. Pull it and the trunk will open.
Need to know which actuator you want to change.
