The whole switch has to be replaced. The bad thing is its Not covered under extended warranty so if the volume control still works but just the backlight is out then they won't cover it. Even though its all part of the switch.

The most effective and accurate way is to take it to a local reputable auto repair facility that has an alignment rack. Have them do a complete alignment. Your steering wheel should be straight after.
Does it actually engage the brakes, or just the brake lights? There should be no possible way for the steering wheel to actuate the braking system, but a short in the wiring somewhere in the steering column could be causing both rear signal lights or brake lights to come on.
