Firstly, you would need to purchase the appropriate filter, oil and you should buy oil treatment fluid, an engine flush solution and a suitable oil pan (I used a deep disposable aluminum baking pan). You're also going to need a 17mm or 11/16 socket wrench/wrench.

First step would be hoisting the car or finding a garage with a self-service 'pit' as the bulk of the work would be done under the engine.

  • You'd be flushing the engine first, according to the directions of the product. This will give you a bit of a fresh start if the oil change wasn't a regular thing.
  • After the flush you would be going under the car, on the right side (if you're lying under) and approximately in the middle of the wheel-well. Before going under though, get a look at the oil filter so you'd have a mental image.
  • The filter would be the first thing you remove and it will be (most likely) a dirtier image of the one you bought. Ensure the pan is there and under the filter as excess oil will drain when you remove it.
  • Next you will notice a bolt about a hand-space away from the filter's spot, this is the plug for the oil (sump) pan. Though sizes may vary, my plug was 17mm. Using the wrench you'd be pulling towards you, granted you're closer to the right wheel-well. Once the plug is slackened a good bet is to finish the unscrewing by hand as the oil can gush out.
  • When the oil has drained you will replace the plug for the oil pan and install the new oil filter to where you removed the old one.
  • You will now add the new oil to the engine (along with the oil treatment, if you purchased it). A good bet is to add one quart, then the treatment, then add the remaining quarts. For this engine you will need about four but another good bet would be to pour about 3.5 quarts, let the engine idle for about ten minutes, check the dipstick to see the quantity then finish the quart if needed.

Congrats, you just changed your own oil.

Please be sure to dispose of the old oil at a proper facility, most service stations have a reservoir that you can use.
