First of all, do NOT buy and oil filter from Walmart. They will give you the wrong one and they don't have the correct one in stock. The Savage does not have a screw on oil filter. Go to a motorcycle dealership to get a filter. Buy 10w-40 oil. Get at least 3 quarts. Car or motorcycle oil: either on works fine. You fist need to drain the old oil. There is a 17mm plug on the left side of the very bottom of the motor. Once it's drained, use an Allen wrench to take off the oil filter guard. It's the triangular shaped thing toward the front on the right side of the engine. Oil will leak out when you take it off so you may want to move your oil pan to underneath of it. Take out the old filter and replace it with the new one. Put the guard back on and the oil plug back in. Add in your new oil at the top of the engine on the right side. Add about a quart and a half to start and then check it in the oil level window (right side at the very bottom). Keep adding a little at a time until it is at the correct level. Once the oil is at the right level start the bike and let it run for a minute or two. Turn the bike off and check the level again. Add oil accordingly. Hope this helped.
Materials needed : 17 mm open ended box wrench, Allen wrenches, oil (motorcycle oil 10w 40 3.5 US quarts, filter Fram CH6004, gloves, drain pan (this will need to be a shallow one in order to get it under your bike), lots of cloths for clean up, and about 45 minutes.
1. You do not need to remove seat , a mistake I made which added extra time.
2. Remove drain plug, located under bike next to the kickstand. You do not need to make the bike vertical at this time while you drain oil. 17 mm wrench is needed.
3. Let oil drain for about 15 minutes. While this is happening go to right side of bike.
4. On this side you will see a circular plate about 3 inches in diameter with 3 bolts in it. Here you need a Allen wrench to do this. Remove all three bolts. Note this is only a cover and mainly is used for cosmetic reasons.
5. Once is plate is removed you will see another plate under it about 5 inches wide and about 15 inches long. Before removing this plate place something on the ground which will catch the oil.
6. There are 5 bolts that will need to be removed. Two bolts are to the extreme right and technically could have been removed prior to the 3 inch circular plate you removed earlier. Meaning you could see these two bolts with the 3 inch plate still on bike.
7. After removing all 5 bolts the plate will come off easily exposing the filter. Note this is a push in filter and will simply just fall out.
8. On the inside of the plate there will be an "O" ring gasket which the new filter comes with and you will need to replace. At this time you can now tip your bike the opposite direction and remove the rest of the oil in case. Dab new oil on the new "O" ring prior to installing.
9. Replace drain plug and add 3.5 quarts of oil.
Hope this helps. I did this the first time and it took me about 45 minutes and the best part is that it saved me about $50. You can email me if you have any questions @ Targets4me@msn.com Good luck!!
Left front corner of engine there is a 17mm bolt. That is the drain plug. Oil filter is on the right side with 3, 5mm allen bolts holding it on. put oil filter back in the same way it comes out!!!
