These instructions apply only to the 4 cylinder engine (2AZ-FE).

  1. Obtain 4 new spark plugs. Be sure to get the iridium long life spark plugs and do not attempt to gap them! If you do gap them, it is strongly suggested that you dispose of them and obtain new plugs.
  2. Remove the plastic valve cover from engine and place aside.
  3. This exposes the individual coil units that cover the plugs.
  4. Disconnect wiring harness from valve cover and unplug harness from each coil unit.
  5. Remove the 10mm bolts that fasten each coil unit to the valve cover, one each.
  6. Gently lift out each coil unit.
  7. Using a 5/8" spark plug socket and long extension, remove each spark plug.
  8. Examine each plug for unusual wear, discoloration, or deposits. An engine in good condition should yield little wear and light tan deposits on the insulators.
  9. Replace with new plugs. Note if new plug is equipped with a gasket. Snug new plugs to finger tight. Then tighten 1/2 turn with gasket or 1/4 turn without gasket. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!
  10. Reassemble parts in revers order. Do not over tighten fasteners.
