You will need:
A jack, jackstands, various wrenches, a ratchet, extension and sockets.
First disconnect the battery.
Remove the starter wires, make sure you remember where they go. Label them with tape if you have to.
Then jack up the car, make sure you secure it with jack stands. You will have to get underneath the front of the car.
Remove the plastic splash guard for the starter, should be 3 small bolts.
That will allow you to get at the two bolts which hold in the starter. One will be a long bolt and the other will be short. You will need to use the extension to get at the one bolt.
Now that everything is unhooked you should be able to pull the starter up front the top of the engine bay.
Replace in reverse order. Good luck!

it is a regulater switch in the fuse box under the hood.
my 96 Monte Carlo did that and it ended up being the chip on the key went bad and it was the switch shutting the fuel pump down for security reasons. call a locksmith....i did
no, you can only swap a 96-98 Monte Carlo 3100 transmission, i am having the same problem with my 95, you can only swap a 95 with a 95....96 through 98 are interchangeable. pontiacs have a different bolt pattern on them anyway.
No you cannot set the timing it is controlled by the ECM.
