The combination for the glove box can't be changed until the glove box is opened. The factory code is "000". You probably have a used car with a different code set. The first step is to find the combination. This can be rather tedious as there are 1000 integers from 0 to 999 if you allow yourself to write leading zeros and you can repeat the same digit three times. In other words they are:
000
001
002

I did manage to find the code for my lock in this fashion. I had my teenage daughter do it while riding by setting a number then pushing the release lever to the right to see if it opens. IE "000 push , 001 push, 002 push", etc. We did not have to change the first two number until it was necessary in the sequence.
Next to change the code per instructions in the manual are as follows:
"Push the glove box release lever to the right to open the glove box.
# With the glove box open, hold the release to the right and slide the yellow tab up.. This locks the release open and permits you to reset the code. # After resetting the code, write it down in case you forget it. # Slide the yellow tab down and the release will return to the closed position. # Close the glove box and move the dials off the code you set to lock it.
Lost Combination If you should lose or forget your combination, there is a small key which will allow you to find the combination. The key looks like a feeler gauge which notches in one end. To find the combination you should: # Insert the notched end of the key into the right side of each dial, then rotate the dial until the key is seated. # Repeat this procedure for each dial in turn and you will have the forgotten combination. # The glove box should now open. For obvious reasons the key should not be left in the glove box. The dealer will provide you with this key when you take delivery of your new Pontiac" This is all of the info in the manual about the glove box. You may or may not have the key. If not revert back to the first steps above to find the combination. I don't believe the keys are still available. I learned that the locks have been discontinued and you would have to scrounge around to find one.
