I installed my copy of Abiword in C:\portableapps\AbiwordPortable. You can change the file direction as needed.

Go to C:\portableapps\AbiwordPortable. Search for a file called normal.awt. Open it in notepad. Search (control F) in the notepad file for "Times". That should bring you to the point you need to be. Change "Times New Roman" (or whatever the default font at the time is) to whatever you want it to be. Note: you must have the font you want installed in c:\WINDOWS\Fonts. Save the notepad file and x out of it. Now, open up Abiword. Your default font should be in effect.
