To change the fuel pressure regulator on a 1987 to 1990 2.8L/3.1L engine:
1. Remove the MAF from the throttle body.
2. Carefully unplug the vacuum connector from the throttle body. Be careful not to break any of the plastic vacuum tubes. Unplug the tube from the EGR valve.
3.. Unbolt the throttle body from the plenum and move it back slightly. It does not need to be removed from the engine.
4. Unbolt the EGR valve and move aside, it does not have to be removed from the engine.
5. Remove the bolts that hold the plenum in place and move the plenum back out of the way. Be careful to not break the plastic vacuum lines, note
how they are routed so they can be put back.
6. Disconnect the fuel lines from the pressure regulator. The inlet line will probably be under pressure, use a rag to catch the fuel. Use gloves to keep the fuel off of your skin. Remove the vacuum lline.
7. Remove the bolts that hold the pressure regulator in place on the fuel rails.
8.. Move the fuel rails aside so that the pressure regulator may be lifted out. This can be done without removing the injectors from the inlet manifold. There are four tubes that connect the fuel to the rails with "O" ring seals. The seals are normally stuck in place and will take some pressure to pull apart. be sure to remove any "O" rings that stay inside the rails.
9. The new pressure regulator will come with replacement "O" rings. Place them appropriately on the new regulator. Use a slight amount of oil on the "O" rings and they will slip into place much easier than if they are left dry.
Put the mounting brackets on the new regulator and put it in place between the fuel rails. Pull the rails together so that he pressure regulator is flush between the rails. This should be readily done, if it is not there is likely something obstructing them. Put the screws back in place.
Reverse the above steps to reassemble. Use new gaskets on the plenum, throttle body and EGR valve.
