The gear shifter has a retaining clip, just below the shifter knob. Hold the retaining clip in, on both sides of the shifter rod, and the shifter knob will come off.

The Volvo 960 does not use a cable type shifter, it uses a rod style shifter linkage. It is a rod from the shifter and one from the transmission connected by a long rod. There is a bushing at each pivot point.
there is a lock nut on the bottom of the shifter. just loosen the nut and should be able unscrew shifter.
unscrew the two hex scres in the middle of the consoule take off the ashtray and cover for the fuses there will be a clip get a small screwdriver to pry the clip off and then you can remvoe the panle and there will be a small bulb that you can replace under the shifter
there is a little lever you have to switch to the left. It is inside the compartment where the on the bottom where the gear shifter knob comes out.
Unscrew it.
Mmm...try telling if its a manual or automatic...the knob has a little scew in the back (the side that points towards the radio) unscrew that by first puttin the shifter in the furthest position back (towards the back of the car) then unscrew the screw and simply pop it off.
