sell the car.
Nice answer, but the car isn't worth much with a broken heater coil. I have the same problem, and I would like a schematic on how to do it. Oh, and by the way, I would get rid of the car, but it was my fathers car, who passed away last May, and my Mother isn't quite ready to part with it. Everyone has a story to tell, so at least be respectful enough to give a dignified answer. Being a smart alic helps know one.
OK my 1st answer was 'terse', but I stand by it. This would be probably close to a full day job for a professional, who is probably going to charge you $100/hr plus parts. Let's say it would cost you $1000 to have a reputable shop do it.
KBB values a 1990 Town Car, in fair condition, with 100K miles, at under $1000 trade in value. (KBB doesn't go back to 87.) I was offered only $400 when I considered trading in my '95 Town Car, in perfect operating condition with only 100,000 miles a year ago. (I just kept it instead, it was worth more than $400 to me to have an extra running comfortable car.)
So unless you have some extenuating sentimental value, or this is something other than a run-of-the-mill 87 Town Car, from a financial perspective you would be better off selling or walking away from this, and taking the money it would have cost to fix it, and buy yourself a newer Town Car...and if you get one with a 4.3 engine like my '95, you might save considerably in gas too. (I routinely get 18 in town, 23-25 on the highway, and have hit 29mpg when I drove a full tank's worth on flat highways at a steady 70mph on cruise control, running the A/C.)
If you still want to try it yourself, get a Haynes or factory set of manuals, schedule a couple of weekends (1 weekend to take it all apart, 1 weekend to put it all together), and go to it.
Good Luck!
