How do you change the light bulb for the gear shift in a Subaru Forester?

On the 1999-2002 forester, open the center storage compartment (Just under your elbow). Pop off the two caps over the screw heads and remove screws. lift this cover up or actually remove it. Then using a pair of long nose pliers remove the small clip under the shift button and carefully pull the button out. Remove the two screws one on each side of the gear shift knob. You may now lift the shift knob off. Now using a small flat screw driver (Careful) pry up the cover over the gear shift mechanism. Carefully unsnap the upper cover containing the gear shift indicator. You can now visualise the shift indicator light on the left. Rotate it counter clockwise about one quarter of a turn and it will pop out the bottom side. Follow the wires to the plug and unplug it. Install the new light and reassemble in reverse order.

Subaru Forester stuck in park?
Our '02 Forester is doing the same thing.... and it may be due to cold temps, at least that's when it started. I found that if I loosen the tilt lever and move the steering column up and down, the shift release lock button will depress and I can shift into park. This still doesn't mean it won't happen again when I stop at the drivethrough though. I suspect a sensor has gone bad in the steering column.

Inside on the drivers side is the light bulb. Mine is also out. I have been trying to find out the bulb before I disassembled the shift console. Do you know the bulb spec? Where is the neutral safety switch on a Subaru Forester?
The neutral safety switch (automatic transmission) is located under the small oblong cover behind the gear shift lever - looking from the driver seat. You first need to remove the cover by a small screw driver and then you need to use (as an old Forester manual tells) the Subaru screwdriver to push the neutral safety switch down. Then you can move the gear shift lever to any position freely. I prepared a small rod and I'm storing in the ashtray that I do not come facing to very anoying situation anymore ..... The trailer's plug caused a short circuit and burned the fuse. At the next stop I was unable to move the gear shift lever from P-position. I was a total bolck of the traffic on that whole area. Unfortunately this piece of information is missing from the current version of Forester's manual and may cause several similar kind on difficult situations, what I already had.
