Oil change steps for this is very similar to most other oil changes... 1. Ensure you have proper tools ,parts and equipment available a. 17mm Wrench/Socket for the Drain Plug b. Filter Wrench (Mine was an end cap style and didnt fit so resorted to Channel Locks) c. Drain Pan (ensure it fits under bike and can hold about 3 quarts {mine was too tall so improvised with cut off milk jug that was "almost" big enough}) d. Funnel for adding oil back into engine e. 4 quarts of oil (Recommended by Dealership was GN4 SAE 10W-40 SJ) f. Oil Filter (P/N 15410-MFJ-D01 on receipt) about 2.5" diameter 2. Warm-Up engine to ensure oil flows well for draining 3. Wipe area around drain plug and oil filter to remove excess dirt that could otherwise get pushed into engine interior (Drain Plug is on left side of crank case toward the bottom front, but is hidden behind from view on the left side by the ribbed radiator hose the feeds intot he bottom center of the radiator. The Oil filter is on the left side as well behind the crank case along the frame rail just behind the kick stand bracket with the threaded end facing toward the front of the bike) 4. Break Drain Plug Loose and then place drain pan under drain plug and remove plug the rest of the way 5. Remove Oil Fill Cap (right side of motorcycle just above the heat shield on front exhaust pipe) to remove vacuum so oil wil drain faster. 6. Wait for oil to stop draining and then replace drain plug and wipe off any remaining used oil from around the drain plug. 7. Break loose the oil filter, place drain pan under filter and remove the rest of the way. 8. Wait for oil to stop dripping and then wipe remaining used oil from the area and verify that the "o" ring for the filter is not still attached to the motor. 9. Open new oil container and using a fiinger place a thin film of oil on the "o" ring on the new filter. 10. Carefully, start threading the new filter onto the motor ensuring that you do not cross thread it and tighten to a "firm" hand tight (2.4-3kgf-m) 11. Using funnel add oil to engine until shows on fill cap "dip stick" 12. Screw the fill cap back in and ensure all tools and parts are out of the way and cycle engine to get oil into the oil filter (commonly people will turn off the gas and cycle the oil pump this way without actually starting the motor) 13. Stop motor if running and check for leaks around the drain plug and oil filter. 14. Remove oil fill cap and check oil again it should have gone down about 1/3 quart (the volume of the oil filter) 15. Fill oil to proper level and replace fill cap. 16. Wipe down bike to remove all spilled/splattered oil. (This is especially important around hoses and wires that will have the plastic/rubber degrade when exposed to oil if not cleaned resuling in wiring faults and/or hose failures.) 17. Start bike and let it idle and look for leaks again around drain plug, oil filter and fill cap. 18. Clean up tools and draing pan and recycle the drained oil. (In our area almost all auto repair chain stores {Kragen, Pep Boys, etc.} freely accept oil for recycling during business hours)
