I have a 1998 sporty and it is pretty easy...look under the frame..there will be a black hose that dead ends to the frame---that is the drain line for the oil...it should be connected with a screw clamp or one of those flex clamps...lossen the clamp...place drain pan underneath the end of the hose and pull hose off frame fitting..drain oil....replace hose...then go remove oil filter--same as with a car......replace filter and fill e' up with oil...start engine and check for leaks.......
follow the drain line out of the oil tank to the bottom of the frame remove the bolt (plug) and drain into a pan. replace the bolt , remove and replace the filter and fill the tank with new oil (3 quarts) check dipstick, start bike let run for 1 minute , let sit for 1 minute check again, add if needed.
It is recommended to flush the crankcase oil system on all Harleys when changing the oil, especially on an Evolution engine.
To do this, complete the steps above except, BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE, remove the oil return line from the oil tank (on your oil tank, the one closest to you when standing on the right side of the bike), and plug a piece of clear hose into the oil LINE. Put the other end into your dirty oil pan or an oil bottle. Start your engine and rev it up gently. You will see dirty oil pumping through the hose and into the jar. run the engine until it comes out clean, this should happen fairly quickly, 10 seconds or so. Then replace the oil return to your oil tank, crank the bike and let run a minute or so. If you drained your oil into an oil bottle, top off your tank with that much oil. If you drained it into your dirty oil pan, fill your oil tank to the recommended level and go for a ride.
Warm up the bike. Look under the bike on the same side as the primary. There will be a rubber hose that dead ends to the frame that is held on with a hose clamp. That's your drain hose. Remove that and allow oil to drain. Removing the oil fill plug will allow it to drain faster. Clamp the hose back to the frame when it's done.
Remove the old oil filter and allow that to drain. Put a coating of oil on the rubber gasket and screw the new filter on hand tight. Don't use a wrench to put it on.
Fill the oil bag with about three quarts of oil, start the bike, and check for leaks.
the trani and primary are one unit so when you do this you will drain from the plug under the primary. it will be a 5/8 bolt. you will have to fill it up through the derby cover, bolts are hex head size 27. be careful with these and use the right size as they very easily strip. you can use Formula+ or Syn3 fluid for this. be sure you know how much as you dont want to over or under fill.
Items needed:
You'll want to have a drain pan that will hold aprox. 3-4 quarts of oil.
New oil filter and oil filter wrench for removal of old filter. (wrench is sold at any auto parts store...even Walmart)
Flat head screw driver (for hose clamp to drain oil)
I like to drive my bike for maybe 3-5min before I try to change the oil. This heats up the oil and allows it to drain from my bike easier.
Then find the drain hose under the bike, should be close to the rear and the only hose with a clamp that holds a plug in. Place your drain pan under the hose. After the pan is in the correct place, use the flat head screw driver to remove the hose clamp, then carefully remove the plug so that hot oil is not poured onto you.
After the oil has been draining and you're down to a drip, sit on the bike and make sure the bike is upright.
After the oil is drained, plug the hose.
Next you're going to want to move your oil drain pan under the oil filter, grab your oil filter wrench, and remove the oil filter.
With your new filter, you should wipe the filter seat clean, pour about 4oz of clean oil into your filter, spread a thin film of oil over the gasket of the new filter, and screw it on. I like to tighten the filter by hand and then 1/4 more with the wrench to make sure it is secure. And you're done. Clean up your mess, wipe down your tools, come back in 3,000 miles.
pull off the drain hose at the bottom of the oil tank, (same as a Softail oil drain).
